This episode begins with a strange meeting between Christ, Simon the Pharisee, and a sinful woman, in which the woman shows an unashamed attachment to and adoration of Christ.
This leads to a sneering assessment by Simon of both Christ and the woman.
In response, Christ tells a striking story about two debtors forgiven by a creditor, one much, one less, the one forgiven more loving more.
Then the Lord presses home a stinging comparison: the sinful woman lavished love upon Christ because she had been forgiven her many sins, but Simon showed Christ no love.
The episode comes to a sweet conclusion: a declaration of forgiveness of sins and peace with God because of faith in Jesus Christ.
PLEASE NOTE: after the sermon, the preacher offered a clarification about the statement that "this is not a church for Simons." While hopefully the context makes it plain, he underlined that he was not saying that people like Simon did not need to hear the gospel, or were not entitled to do so, or that they could not be saved. To suggest that would be pharisaical about Pharisees! His point was that no one in the church should entertain the attitudes of Simon the Pharisee as portrayed in the narrative, but that all such should repent of that spirit, and acknowledge that they too were sinners in need of a Saviour.
