Jesus is giving His last bit of detailed personal information before He leaves. The disciples don't really understand what's about to happen, and He's trying to tell them, as well as giving them the last bit of instructions He wants them to have. 16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. This word “ordained” means “to be appointed, to be chosen” in Greek. Jesus chose all of us for a specific reason. We just need to ask Him through prayer what He wants us to do, and do it when He answers. He will equip you to do what He wants you to do. What you do in Christ will stay with you after judgment and the burning off of the chafe of all the extraneous activities of you life. Whenever you pray to God, ask for it in Jesus' name, not your own or He won't give it to you. He also won't give you anything that's bad for you. “Ordained” means “chosen and being sent out”. They are to go out and deliver His message to the world after He leaves. All Christians need to stay abiding in Christ to bring forth fruit. If we don't stay close to Christ, we fail. The fruit you bring forth through the Lord remains forever. God gives you what is good for you, and He knows that if you're close to Him, you will pray for things that He wants you to have, things that glorify Him. He won't answer prayers for selfish reasons, like winning the lottery, fame, or fortune. 17 These things I command you, that ye love one another. A command is to be followed without question.
