We have been studying the ‘New Jerusalem' as the future eternal state of Heaven. Most of the truth in the Bible concerning this city is found in Hebrews and Revelation. Here in Galatians, however, we have a remarkable statement concerning the “Jerusalem which is above.” That could only refer to the New Jerusalem as well.
The interesting thing about Paul's inspired mention of the heavenly Jerusalem here in Galatians is that he clearly connects it with motherhood! It is “the mother of us all.” In what sense is this city a “mother,” and in what sense is it “free”?
As parents, the model for our home should be the heavenly home above. Motherhood is especially sacred, because, more than anyone else, the mother exerts the most influence on her impressionable children. Our children can “be fitted for service above” as we seek to give them a heritage of holiness. The best of mothers is still a sinner, but having experienced the grace of God herself, she can seek to magnify that grace in her children, so that they will be “free” also.
