Jesus argued that His leaving the disciples was necessary for the greater work of God to be fulfilled. His leaving them included His going to the cross, His resurrection, and His exaltation to the right hand of the Father. In the meantime, the disciples would continue the work He began, indeed, greater works would they accomplish. This was possible because, in the absence of Jesus, the Holy Spirit would indwell His people. We are building the kingdom of God and when the work is done, Jesus will return to rule in a new heavens and a new earth.
