When the Lord sought to humble Israel before Him it in direct response to their fear and unbelief when the spies reported that there was great danger in the Land of Promise. Though there was incredibly rich natural provision, there were giants in the land (Num. 13:28-29). They failed to remember God's promises, but were rather controlled by fear and so rejected the call (willfully disobeyed), the spies then painting a bleak picture for the rest of Israel whom they were to encourage, save Joshua and Caleb. For this rejection God sent them to the wilderness to judge them and to teach them - to humble them for their rebellion and in this He was preparing them to enter the Land when He would bring them back. Well that is a lot to say this, God humbles us that He might lead us, God humbles us, that we might faithfully follow Him.
