Idea: As Isaiah prophecies this deliverance of Jerusalem in history, it becomes an occasion to look further in history to consider what God would do through the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ. The Son of God would act as our Judge, our Lawgiver, and our King.
1. Judge (vss. 1-9) - God prompts us to cry out in prayer to the one who judges.
2. Lawgiver (vss. 10-13)- Motyer, “The people who live in Zion have a terrifying awareness of the seriousness of sin and the impossibility that sinners can dwell in the presence of holiness....The sequence of the poem is thoroughly biblical: before people can really hear the word of forgiveness (vs. 24) they must face the rigour of the demands of the divine law. This, and this only, is the person who can enter the new Zion and dwell in the presence of the holy fire...”
3. King (vss. 14-24) - The restorations promised here signify the greatest restoration, that of our souls under Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, the righteous one, is our glorious king. He has brought us to a pleasant place of rest spiritually in His kingdom. He wipes away the terror and tears of times past, comforting us in His love, assuring us of forgiveness.
