Jeremiah is instructed to visit the potter's house and observe his reworking of a marred pot into another useful vessel. The Lord used this to argue for His right to rework marred Judah into a new and holy vessel. The Hebrew word for potter is "shaper" and the Lord plays on that word in verse 11, "I am shaping disaster . . ." The Lord's aim was to create a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9, 10) in Jesus Christ to fulfill His promise to Abraham. This passage clearly argues for God's sovereignty in salvation. Paul cites the reference in two New Testament texts: Romans 9:19–29 and 2 Timothy 2:20, 21.
