As we come to the end of the third chapter of John, we encounter a summation of the doctrine revealed over the course of the chapter (and before). The Savior is revealed to be the Eternal Word – co-equal with the Father and the Holy Spirit. The Savior has been revealed to be the light which shines in the darkness. He has been revealed to be Promised Messiah who was predicted by the prophets and then affirmed by the Forerunner. He revealed His divine power of creation in turning water into wine, and His humble humanity as one who shared in the joy of a wedding and submitted to baptism. He appeared suddenly and entered the temple to exert His authority by casting out those who sought to demean the worship of God by making the holy common. He clarified the truths revealed by preaching the gospel of regeneration to the chief Teacher of the Jews, and then prophesied that His death would be the salvation of His people.
