The Jews who had heard the Scriptures week after week left the synagogue, while the proselytes stayed and desired to understand. The Jews were not upset by that until the whole city came to hear Paul. Where the Jews had been in the city and did have Gentiles come to the synagogue, but they never had the response that Paul had. Instead of rejoicing in the movement of God, they became envious and opposed Paul. The people still rejoiced in the work of God, so the Jews went to the wives of the prominent men who subsequently expelled Paul and Barnabas. We should always expect when opposition to the gospel fails in one way that Satan will attempt to thwart its spread another way. But God is sovereign over it all, so the word of the Lord continued to spread. Matthew 13:33 - "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened." Regardless of how much the world, the flesh and the devil desire to stop the word of God, it will continue to spread and have an effect. May we trust this and may we be faithful to fulfill our role.
