During funerals, certain social norms regulate our behavior. Certain topics are never broached and if there are “issues”, those are set aside for the time being. People seek to convey their condolences while paying their respects. Often, most of us are grieving.
Yet, Jesus seems to miss those “cues” and seems to be socially insensitive. He is engaged in discussing theology. Was it the right thing to do? Was this the right time since Mary and Martha were grieving?
Our Lord’s great concern was not to directly console Mary and Martha but instead to instruct them as to who He is. Our greatest need is to have a clear view of who Christ is. That will do more to console us than anything else in this world.
