After the harsh prerequisites laid out by Jesus regarding what is demanded of His followers, He comforts & reassures Peter, James & John, that although the Messiah, as the Son of Man, must suffer & be rejected & die, by no means is this contrary to God's eternal & sovereign plan to establish His kingdom over His people.
In the Transfiguration, God is giving His stamp of approval that Jesus' upcoming death is pleasing in His sight, and that Jesus, as the embodiment & fulfillment of the entire OT, is now to be heeded & obeyed, especially His command to deny ourselves, pick up our cross & follow Him.
