This is a study of Paul's epistle to the Thessalonians, which was written shortly after his first epistle to them. There was false doctrine that was circulating in the church at Thessalonica, that led Paul to write so quickly after his first letter to them. As Paul praises them for two things, we see what is of primary importance in the local church. First there is to be growth, not primarily in numbers but in the faith of those attending. We are to grow in our faith in God. Every day brings tests of how deep our faith or trust is in Him and in His perfect love and plan for us. Secondly, we are to always be advancing in our love for each other. So that our goal is to be continually more loving of the brethren each day. Even though we are already loving the brethren to some degree, we are to excel still more. As we grow in the Lord and our love for all the saints we will also be those who persevere because of our faith in our Lord and because of our love for all our brothers and sisters in Christ. This faith in our Sovereign God and our love for His people, cause us to persevere in the race that He has set before us, even though tested severely by persecution and the tribulations of life. The ones who are persecuting us are proving the righteousness of God in His judging of them for their unremitting hatred of Him and His people. Here we also deal with why idolatry is so popular with those who hate the true God, as it allows them to embrace a god of their choosing, and one that agrees with their own wicked ways. Men hate the Holy God, because He testifies that their deeds are evil.
