Consolation in affliction, the third practical implication of providence, is considered. The context of the primary passage (Job 23) is identified. The context involved the bewildering perplexity, as to the purpose or design, of Job's lingering afflictions. Job's expression of his longing to find God (23:1-7) is examined. Finally the mystery of providence in the present circumstance of Job's afflictions (23:8-9) is considered. Job's consolation was, though in the present moment of trial he could not find purpose, yet God knew what he did not. Job declared, "But He knows the way I take." The certainty that God did know the purpose of his lingering afflictions, though veiled to Job, was his comfort. May we learn to endure "the frowning providence" persuaded that behind it God "hides a smiling face." In His time He will make His purpose plain.
