'As the apostle says to Timothy, so also he says to everyone, 'Give yourself to reading.' He who will not use the thoughts of other men's brains proves that he has no brains of his own. You need to read. Renounce as much as you will all light literature, but study as much as possible sound theological works, especially the Puritanic writers, and expositions of the Bible. The best way for you to spend your leisure is to be either reading or praying.'

Why Read Richard Baxter? A Reformed Blog asked: What do you think of Richard Baxter? My reply was,
Always come to your own conclusion. If you read, the Reformed Pastor, Now or Never, The Saint's Rest, The Christian Directory, Directions for a Sound Conversion, and his sermon in the Puritan Morning Exercises on Melancholy And Overmuch Sorrow, and you are not the better for it, and stirred up. the problem may well be with you. Those persons who are such great theologs that the ONLY thing they can tell you is that Baxter was not clear on justification probably can't name one of his books they read 10 pages in a row in if they were honest. This evening, while researching the titles of Baxter, I just learned something new. He wrote a preface to Joseph Alleine's Alarm to the Unconverted. I will begin narrating this tomorrow. There is enough unction in Baxter and Alleine combined to thaw this Michigan winter. Well at least the winter that shadows my heart.
