The Sunday known as Palm Sunday commemorates the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, amid shouts of "Hosanna!" which were the heartfelt cries of the people who were expecting their Messiah. Although it was right for Him to be greeted that way, Jesus knew that their praise would soon turn to cries of "Crucify Him!" when it became evident that He was not the kind of Messiah that they were expecting after all. During that time, Jesus demonstrated in words and deeds that judgment was coming for their unbelief; He cursed a fig tree, cleansed the temple, disputed with the scribes and Pharisees, and told the parable of the vineyard, which is a climactic parable of the history of Israel and God's patience in sending prophets and ultimately sending His Son. In this passage, we see a fascinating juxtaposition of the people's responsibility in rejecting their own Messiah paired with the Lord's sovereignty in using even their rejection of the Lord Jesus to accomplish His will in saving sinners. What a God we serve!
