Jesus' miracles were designed to promote faith. They revealed something about him that should lead people to believe in him. But faith is not always the same - it can grow over time. When Jesus healed the man at the Pool of Bethesda it raised questions about him that became part of debate soon after. It also raises questions about those who hear his gospel. The man was asked a simple question, 'Do you want to be made better?' but did not give a straight answer. Like him, people sometimes lose faith that matters can ever improve. Jesus did not hold that against him (how gracious!) and spoke a word of power and authority that led to him acting in faith and finding he had been healed. Such faith in Jesus' word can transform us. It is common for controversy to be stirred by the work of the gospel. People challenged the man. It raised the issue of who Jesus is - for he had taken authority over the Sabbath law. It raised the issue of what Jesus can do - to which he replied that both gives life and judges. That in turn challenges us. What is our attitude to God? The answer will depend on our attitude to Jesus, and our faith, or otherwise, in him.
