When we are trying to figure out how life works, we must not keep God out of the equation. We must act as if God exists. When God is going to do something major in our lives, He will probably require us to do something and it is likely to be something embarrasing. God had Abram begin to call himself Abraham which means the father of many. He was not to call his wife Sarah instead of Sarai. These names would have probably been embarrasing. When God asked Abraham and the males in his houseold to be circumcised which was painful. Obedience is often painful. Often times when God wants us to do something miracleous, we will shoot lower. God likes to work with the miracleous. God wants our obedience, He does not need our help.
