Today’s passage deals with fear. In fact, the word fear is mentioned four times just in verse 18 alone. It deals with alleviating fear, casting out fear.
But these verses are often misunderstood. So what do these verses tell us about fear?
To answer this question, we are going to dissect this passage to understand what it is saying. Then we are going to put it back together and see how these pieces all fit. To give us our answer.
There are three things that I want to look at in these two verses.
First what is the object of fear? Is it fear in general? fear of spiders? fear of marriage? Fear of God? It is very important that we know what type of fear is being addressed. Otherwise we may wrongly apply this passage.
The second is what is perfect love? It is mentioned three times in this passage. This is a key dealing with fear. “Perfect love casts out fear.”
The third question is what is the goal of this passage of this perfect love that casts out fear. Where is he going with this?
