Despite certain opposition from the world, we must persevere! The world's attitude: They hated Christ's disciples (18-19) The world hated Jesus (18) The world loves its own (19a) Christ chose His disciples out of the world (19b) Therefore, the world hates Christ's disciples (19c) The world's actions: They persecuted Christ (and they will us!) (20) A slave is not greater than his master (20a) Their actions are a result of God's distinguishing grace (20b-c) Some will persecute (20b) Some will listen (20c) The world's sin: They rejected Jesus as the Son of God (21-24) They persecute Christians on account of Jesus' name (21a) They persecute Christians because they don't know God (21b) They have no excuse for their sin (22) Their hating of Jesus means hating of the Father (23-24) Their opposition is a fulfillment of Scripture (25) Applications: We must not be surprised when this hostility comes.
