Have you ever had a family problem that seemed too hard to solve? Have you ever been downtrodden, because you didn’t know how the situation could get any better? Have you ever had a son or daughter that was physically sick or was spiritually astray? Maybe you had tried everything in your power to get them help, but nothing seemed to work. It appeared to be a hopeless situation. In our passage today, Peter, James, and John has just witnessed the glory of Jesus Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration. Elijah and Moses were discussing with Jesus his upcoming death in Jerusalem, and the disciples heard the instructions from God the Father who declared, “This is my beloved Son, hear him.” Once they came down from the mountain, Jesus instructed them to tell no one until after his resurrection. As they descend, they enter the valley of suffering. The nine disciples have encountered a hard case. A father has attempted to bring his demon-possessed son to Jesus. When he didn’t find Jesus, he took his son to the 9 disciples who were waiting at the base of the mountain. He appealed to them to cast the demon out of his son. They were powerless to do so. On the other hand, the scribes have been questioning them continuously, and this opportunity probably enabled them to cast further doubt of Jesus and His disciples work. Jesus steps into this scene. He steps into a hard case and gives hope to a family in need.
