While at the San Bernardino FPAWH abortuary, a young man pulled up alongside us, stopping his car in the middle of the road. He was on his way to work. He was bothered by what we were doing and wanted to tell us so. Patty tried to reason with him through his car window. When traffic started to back up behind us, Patty told the young man to park his car (in a parking lot this time) and come out to talk to us.
He obliged. His name was Diego. Diego's demeanor was haughty, judgmental, and ultimately hypocritical. Together, Patty and I brought Diego to the realization that his worldview was not only unsupportable, but absurd.
The turning point in the conversation was when Diego asserted that he determined his own authority (law and justice). I said to him, "Then if that's the case, then I can give myself the authority to murder people."
The moment Diego tried to argue against the argument he himself had made, everything changed: his posture, his demeanor, his tone of voice, and the look in his eyes. He realized in that one defining moment everything he convinced himself was true was, in fact, a lie of his own creation.
"Let's start over. I'm Tony."
What followed was a wonderful gospel conversation, with Diego and I exchanging phone numbers.
GOD DID THAT! And ONLY God did that. Patty and I were allowed to watch God work on a young man's heart and mind.
Please join us in praying for Diego's salvation. Oh. And as Diego drove away, he told the members of the team at the driveway that we were all doing a good job by being at the abortion clinic. SDG!
