As the world’s population increases according to Genesis, it does so with universal recognition that God had cursed the ground with the result that life was now hard for everyone because of The Fall (Genesis 3:17–19). Yet in the midst of this curse there remained hope in accordance with God’s promise that of a man (“the seed of the woman” [Gen. 3:15]) would eventually crush the serpent and thereby overturn the curse. This hopeful anticipation causes Lamech to believe that Noah would be that savior saying, “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands”” (Genesis 5:28–29).
Noah, as God’s instrument, does not bring worldwide relief, but rather worldwide destruction. How is it that in the midst of worldwide wickedness that Noah finds favor in the eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6:8) and thereby is rescued from God’s judgment?
