GETTING READY FOR THE JUDGMENT: SHOWING MERCY TOWARD JESUS’ “BROTHERS” Matthew 25:31-46 We must show mercy toward Jesus’ disciples.
All will stand before the Son of Man as King (31-32)
- Jesus will come and sit on His glorious throne (31)
- All the nations will be gathered before Him (32)
- He will separate all individuals into two groups (32-33) The “sheep” at His right hand (33) The “goats” at His left hand (33)
All will receive the eternal consequences of their actions (34-46)
- “Sheep” receive their reward (34-40) Cause: Blessed (34) Evidence: Mercy toward disciples (35-40) End: Eternal life (46)
- “Goats” receive their punishment (41-46) Cause: Accursed (41) Evidence: No mercy toward disciples (42-45) End: Eternal punishment (46)
Who are “these brothers of mine, even the least of them”? (v. 40) - Anyone in need? - Jewish believers? - Apostle and other Christian missionaries? - Christ’s disciples, or all Christians!
Implications God must give us a heart of mercy toward our brothers and sisters. We must take that heart of mercy and apply it toward serving them.
“We must bear in mind that it is common to the whole scriptural picture that we are saved by grace and judged by works.” Leon Morris, Matthew, p. 634 Matthew 16:27; Romans 2:6; 2 Cor 5:10
