Public weddings are common to mankind and virtually everyone has attended a wedding; most have attended multiple weddings. A feast, or reception as we call it, is usually included as part of the joining of two in marriage. As today's text indicates, wedding feasts were also common in ancient days all over the world. The Savior's first public miracle was in the context of a wedding feast. (John 2) But what if you invited all your closest friends and family and none wanted to come? How would you respond? The king in our text invited them again, but eventually as the day approached, he gathered any who would come even if they had not been close friends and relatives and waged war on those who despised him. Those who came enjoyed a sumptuous feast, but there were wedding crashers who tried to sneak in who were violently cast out. What is the point of this parable? If we understand that the Savior is directly challenging the Jews who were rejecting Him, both the promise and warning become clear. – Pastor Schlegel
