The Resurrected Body. John 21:1-25In this chapter, we see Jesus appearing to them by the Sea of Galilee, engaging in a series of encounters that ultimately serve to reaffirm their faith and commission them for the task ahead. The chapter opens with Simon Peter, still grappling with his denial of Jesus during the crucifixion, deciding to return to his former occupation as a fisherman. Joined by several other disciples, they spend the night fishing but catch nothing. As dawn breaks, a figure appears on the shore, calling out to them and advising them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat. Following this guidance, they haul in a miraculous catch of fish. It is then that John recognizes the figure as Jesus, prompting Peter to eagerly swim to shore to meet him. Upon reaching land, the disciples find Jesus preparing a meal of fish and bread. This simple act of hospitality signifies Jesus' continued care and provision for his followers. As they gather around him, Jesus engages Peter in a conversation that carries profound significance. Three times Jesus asks Peter if he loves him, each time instructing him to feed his sheep. This exchange not only addresses Peter's previous denial but also reaffirms his calling to shepherd and care for the followers of Christ. Following this conversation, Jesus foretells Peter's future, indicating the manner in which he will glorify God through his life and ultimately face martyrdom. This prophecy serves to both encourage and challenge Peter, reminding him of the importance of steadfast faithfulness in the face of trials to come. The chapter concludes with Jesus issuing a directive to Peter, calling him to follow him.
