We as parents long to see our children walk with the Lord. The Proverbs remind us, "The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice" and "A foolish son is a grief to his father and bitterness to her who bore him" (Prov. 23:24 17:25). Eli the Priest is often regarded as the paradigm of parental failure because he failed to exercise control over his wicked sons which resulted in tragedy for his entire household.
1 Samuel 2 is not primarily about parenting, however. The big picture is that God is bringing new and better leadership for His people. The fall of Eli's house will result in the rise of Samuel as the last Judge over Israel. Samuel will be the kingmaker who will anoint David as the Israel's great king. Ultimately this passage looks to the coming of Christ who will be a Priest and King who surpasses Eli, Samuel and David.
