The importance of Jesus active obedience (fulfilling all righteousness) and passive obedience (submission to death on a cross to bear the sins of the world) are simultaneously upheld in Matthew and John. We also are provided with an explanation harmonizing Matthew and John's accounts of Jesus' baptism. This also becomes a great occasion in which to see the simultaneous actions of the three persons of the Godhead (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). We see from the outset of the gospel records the doctrine of the Trinity upheld.
