God's people were in real need. The supplies of grain they brought with them from Egypt were almost exhausted, and they were in the wilderness. God wonderfully supplied them with bread: It came from heaven, freely offered life to all who would eat, was to be depended upon daily, was unlike any other, was offered for a household, had to be personally appropriated, was crushed, beaten and baked, was rejected by many. Jesus said, 'I am the true bread from heaven.'
