David's soul is his chief concern in this psalm, his very life. He is conscious of the threats he is under, and asks God to preserve him. We see here the twin aspects of his request (keep and deliver me), the dreadful alternative (that he would be put to shame), and the sure foundation of his plea (that he has put his trust in God alone). Here is an example of faith and an encouragement to trust with all our heart in the God of salvation.
