When Jesus commissioned his apostles to proclaim the gospel he gave a wonderful description of what that involved. As his church today we need to heed what he said then. It consisted of five double statements. 1) The message was that Christ died for our sins and rose again - with all the implications of that. Note the gospel is based on facts we cannot ignore; it is not something where we can pick and choose. 2) Both forgiveness and repentance are involved - we cannot have either without the other. Christ enables us to turn from our sins, and there can be no forgiveness without that turning. These are two sides of the restored relationship. 3) The gospel must be preached to 'all nations beginning at Jerusalem'. It is for everyone; no one need to go to hell, anyone can be forgiven and turn from their sin. It is for Jews as much as for the rest of the world - there is no difference in that regard. 4) We have two sets of witnesses - prophets and apostles. Jesus life fulfilled what the prophets wrote thus giving it greater credibility; and the apostles were eye-witnesses of those events. 5) There is a double sending. Christ sends his church with the gospel. We may think it a hopeless task but he also promises to send the Holy Spirit who will 'convict the world' and also continue his work in believers till to its conclusion.
