Everyone is a slave to someone or something—whether it is a person, possession, or activity. We become slaves of whomever or whatever we “present” ourselves to. There is no way to opt out. We are either under the power of sin or under the power of God. Paul is not saying, "Choose which master you want to serve!" He is saying "You used to be slaves to sin. Once sin was your master but now you have been set free. Righteousness is now your master." That’s why dangerous talk about 'going on in sin because you are no longer under law but under grace' is unthinkable. Sin, which only brought shame and great loss, is no longer your master. You are now enslaved to God, having fruit that leads to holiness and eternal life. We will never know real power over sin unless we realize that sin’s power over us has been broken!
