The Forerunner, in correcting and instructing his disciples, illustrates his doctrine powerfully by his life. He insists that the object of his ministry – the long-awaited and promised Messiah – must overshadow his own person and life. By his doctrine he reveals an inevitable event: Christ must increase; he must decrease. It is necessary that John fade into the background. There is no sense of bitterness or resentment. On the contrary, the Forerunner's illustration is one of great joy and consolation. He rightly perceives his office as one like a "best man" at the wedding of his friend. It would be wrong for the best man to overshadow the bridegroom and most certainly wrong for him to claim any rights concerning the bride. What a beautiful picture the Forerunner paints for his disciples and for us! The grand purpose of the Messiah is to take unto Himself His beautiful, redeemed, and pure bride. This is a purpose worthy to be perpetually celebrated. This is a purpose worthy to announce to the world. This is a purpose decreed from eternity and manifested even today. – Pastor Schlegel
