We live in a culture that increasingly believes truth and love are in conflict. Truth must not be spoken, the world says – to do so is to be unlovely. Love, says the world, is to embrace anything anyone believes. God’s Word says just the opposite. “To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth...” (2 John 1 – NKJV) Not only do truth and love go together, they’re both corrupted when one is absent. Christian fellowship is rooted in both truth and love. That’s why we’re not to welcome anyone into our fellowship who is peddling untruthful messages. “Do not receive him... for he who receives or greets him shares in his evil deeds.” (vv. 10-11) John’s second epistle is one of the shortest books in our Bibles, but it conveys a vital message for us today.
