The inspired book of Acts and the Epistles of the New Testament address many corruptions of the truth that were attacking these struggling churches at that time. They were warned and so are we: “Many false prophets are gone into the world” (1 John 4:1). There is nothing new under the sun. This warning is needed at all times because that which is false is never presented as false; it is always presented as truth. That is why we must be so familiar with Christ’s truth, that we be not misled or deceived by the counterfeit. Those sheep who know well and intimately the truthful voice of the Good Shepherd speaking in Scripture will flee those in whom they hear not the truthful voice of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Lord has given to His Church faithful pastors and teachers as gifts to prevent the ever present leaven of false doctrine that is circulated from pulpits, in books, magazines, and websites (Ephesians 4:14). That is how we should view not only faithful ministers of the present, but faithful ministers and teachers from the past, especially when they gathered in General Assemblies, Synods, and Presbyteries to declare the mind of Christ in Scripture about a controversy or a false doctrine that threatened the health or life of the church. Let us turn to Acts 15 today.
The main points from our text this Lord’s Day are the following: (1) False Teaching Arises and Breeds Dissension in the Church of Antioch (Acts 15:1-2); (2) False Teaching Is Even Exposed within the Church of Jerusalem While the Apostles Were There (Acts 15:3-5).
