Jesus shocks the disciples by telling them that the temple, the one their hopes were pinned on for Him to reign in would be destroyed. You may remember their thinking from Luke 19:11. Then, Jesus begins to tell them the landmarks/signs that will precede their persecution (v. 12) and will precede His return. These signs one could look at and say, "Well, we've seen this stuff all down through history!" That's true. However, Jesus tells us in Matthew 24:8 that these signs will increase in intensity and frequency like a woman's labor pains.
