When Paul says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23) he is closing his case for the brokenness of humanity. No one is exempt from sinfulness. No one measures up to God's holiness. Universal human inadequacy is central to the Bible's message. It is this theme that evokes people like the Philippian jailer to cry out, "What must I do to be saved?" (Acts. 16:30).
And without always using those same words everyone asks the same question: How can I be saved? People who know that they are broken still want to flourish. Everyone has a plan of salvation, a way, however imperfectly, that they can make the most out of the existence they have been afforded. Some people try to compensate for sin by trying to create meaning. It can feel like salvation to be good, to exercise moral competence.
As missionaries into a broken world Christians need to understand how people often try to be saved in contrast with Scripture's message of the gospel.
