Most of the attention we devote to the resurrection focuses on the morning, when the women went to the garden to anoint the body and found the tomb open and empty. But there were other significant events that day. Among them was Jesus' appearance on the Emmaus road, when He engaged His 'cloaking device' to question and instruct two downcast followers. Spurgeon writes: 'The two disciples on the road to Emmaus had a most profitable journey. Their companion and teacher was the best of tutors; the interpreter one of a thousand, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The Lord Jesus condescended to become a preacher of the gospel, and He was not ashamed to exercise His calling before an audience of two persons, neither does He now refuse to become the teacher of even one.' The applications derived from this passage include: 1) Jesus did in fact physically, bodily, rise from the dead. 2) He was thereby declared to be 'the Son of God, with power.' 3) If these disciples were rebuked for not knowing the Scriptures, what would He say to us? 4) These disciples were despondent when they had no cause to be.
