Sodom & Gomorrah are referred to proverbially to represent societies that have fallen over the cliff of wickedness and immorality. Because of their sins, God destroyed those cities by raining down fire from heaven until they were utterly decimated. He judged them.
That is typically the way we think of God's judgment—as a dramatic display of His wrath in fire and brimstone falling from above. But as our last study from Romans 1:18-23 showed, that's not the only way that God brings judgment on people. In that passage—in verse 18—Paul says that "the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth."
What that means is that God is showing His wrath right now. Though there is a day of wrath coming in the future when the Lord Jesus returns to earth, God brings judgment on people before that great and awful Day of Final Judgment in the future.
The Scripture that we will consider today explains one way that He does this.
