Our message today is the second part of “Behold Your King”, based on John 19:16-30. We’ve noted that Pilate’s words are like a sign over the scene that John presents to us. John is trying to get us to behold the King as He goes to Calvary and makes His great sacrifice. We’re going to look a three of the sayings at the cross, part of the seven sayings Jesus says in the four gospels.
In the first part, we saw the judicial abandonment of the King, the voluntary offering of the King, the comprehensive agony of the King, the confirmed identitiy of the King, and the scandalous dishonor of the King.
When we look at the cross, particularly how John presents it, we see a Lamb at first glance, but when we keep looking, we see a Lion. Just as John weeps over the scroll in Revelation and is told the Lion of Judah could open it, then sees the Lamb who was slain and realizes the Lion is actually the Lamb, we see a Lamb at first glance, the we see a Lion, the King.
