How did a young man with so many privileges, so much potential, so many prospects, whose early life seemed so promising, how did he end up losing his life and dying without hope? How did he finally come to be in this dreadful position? How was it that this young man – with everything to live for - did not follow in his father’s footsteps, have his father’s faith or love his father’s God? That’s something that begs closer examination – for as it was with Absalom, so it is with countless other young people! How many have been brought up under the influence of the gospel, raised in Christian homes, attended the house of God with their parents, taught the scriptures throughout their lives, prayed over and pleaded with to come to Christ, been given every advantage and privilege in the gospel, yet this morning finds them far from God and on the way that leads to everlasting Hell. That is the most tragic situation any person could possibly imagine. Not only because of the great concern, grief that it brings to saved parents (and there is nothing that troubles parents more than to see their children refusing Christ and going on in sin) but this is the most tragic situation because according to Matthew 11:24 God’s wrath will be more tolerable for the sinners of Sodom, than for those who go from a Christian home to a Christless hell.
