The apostle, facing a trial, presents a dilemma. On the one hand, he wants to be freed so he can continue with his ministry. On the other hand, he wants to depart from this life, knowing that death is the door he must go through if he is to enjoy the presence of his saviour in a more immediate way. He boldly confesses that for his life in this world, he has Jesus Christ, but when he dies things will get even better. The outcome of this thought process is his conviction that, for the present time at least, God would have him continue with his earthly ministry. He sets an example of a holy attitude which puts Christ at the centre of our lives while also looking forward to our departure where we can enjoy the same resurrection Paul so craved. |
