Having been arrested and taken before the Jewish leadership, Jesus is unjustly condemned and then taken before Pontius Pilate so that Pilate can pronounce the sentence of death, which the Jews were prohibited from doing under Roman rule. But after speaking with the Jewish accusers and after questioning Jesus, Pilate declares that Jesus is not guilty of the accusations against Him. But, being a man of weak character and political savvy, Pilate realizes that the Jews can make trouble for him if he does not condemn Jesus.
