Food is often significant in the Bible. God provided abundant food for mankind in the garden. The first sin involved eating. God shares meals with his people including the Passover, the Lord’s Supper and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. God fed His people with manna in the wilderness. The promises of the Old Covenant involved having plenty of food and the curses involved starvation. Meals are important in the Gospel of Luke. Jesus participates in significant meals with various people, including both Pharisees and sinners. Some of His parables have to do with meals and eating.
The miracle of the feeding of the five thousand (probably over twenty-thousand, including women and children) is an important miracle. It is the only miracle, other than the resurrection, which is recorded in all four gospels. This miracle comes at a strategic point in Luke’s gospel as it points to the answer to the question, “Who is Jesus?” Both Jesus’ disciples and the crowds still don’t understand.
This miracle also has significance for us as we look to Jesus as the bread of life. Like the disciples, we are called to feed others on His behalf.
