Summary, Part 2 (final) We will never be the loser for obeying God’s word. When we’re tempted to compromise our faith, we must remember before Whom we will stand on the Day of Judgment. Spurgeon: The peace-at-any-price people have no portion in the Kingdom of Heaven. Bearing the cross is to defy our own will and obey God’s. Annesley: Keep your conscience from being violated and you cannot be miserable; know and do your duty, avoid byways, and leave all effects, consequences, and events to God. Also, avoid spiritual impressions that contradict the clear teaching of God’s word. The leading of the Spirit will never contradict the teaching of the Spirit. ROM 8:4, EZ 36:27. We are not to walk according to God’s secret will, which we can’t know, but by His revealed will, which is the Bible. A Reformed Christian is one who orders his life by the teaching of the Bible. In his prayers, he asks for light in the dark places of his soul and its alignment with the Scriptures. He is humble. He is Reformed, but always reforming by the light of the word and the grace of the Spirit. Christ spoke of the faith in radical terms: plucking out eyes, bearing a cross, dying to oneself daily. This is not legalism, but trampling on our lusts to obey God. MATT 5:6

Summary, Part 1 Based on Samuel Annesley’s Sermons at Cripplegate
1. IF YOU MAINTAIN A GOOD CONSCIENCE, CONSULT YOUR DUTY NOT IN GOD’S PROVIDENCE BUT IN HIS PRECEPTS. Annesley: “There is nothing for us to do but to mind our duty.” Question 3 in the Westminster Shorter Confession affirms this. We must learn our duty from the word of God. PS 119:105, PROV 6:23. Providence may confirm our duty, but never determines it. The word of God is the lamp for our feet. Providence can hinder our duty (ACTS 9) and appear to command what is forbidden (JONAH). Providence is never a clear and trustworthy guide (DEUT 29:29). Our duty is revealed, but providence is of God’s secret will. Danger is in the way of disobedience, and blessing is in the way of obedience (PS 19:11). This is walking by faith and not by sight. The chains that awaited Paul in Jerusalem didn’t stop him from going there at the Lord’s command. Hard-hearted rebellion against God puts us in harm’s way. DEUT 29:19 tells us that God can be at war with us even if we think we’re at peace with Him. Our hearts are deceitful and desperately wicked. PROV 28:6. Foolishness is not excusable. We should always follow God’s will even if obedience appears costly. Annesley: “To venture upon sin to avoid danger is to sink the ship for fear of pirates.”
