The return of our Master is not just a cause for interesting speculation as to the timing of his return. Rather it provides a strong motive for being ready and prepared for his return by faithful service. Knowing that He will come at an hour when you do not expect Him should keep us awake and watching, not out of fear but out of love for a master who looks forward to returning and serving us!
How God longs to reward faithful servants with greater responsibility - the management of all His possessions - no wonder there is severe judgement for those who think the Lord's delay in returning is an opportunity to run amuck and abuse those for whom they were responsible. Knowing the Master's will and yet wilfully ignoring it results in a more severe punishment for much more is required from those who have been entrusted with much. It is clear in all this that with increasing responsibility comes increasing accountability. Our understanding of the grace of God should not diminish this warning of judgement.
