Successful people share one thing in common in achieving their goal: Something has captivated their attention and captured their affection. From then on their lives are focused, dedicated to following a single, linear course; and the sum total of their resources and energy is directed toward that end.
The human being really does live a linear life even though some appear to live life randomly or, 'all over the map!' But, what does this principle mean for the Christian? The truth is, the significance of it is no different for the Christian.
The Chrstian journey is referred to in Scripture as a 'walk.' This is an important term. A person's 'walk' speaks of the course, manner and direction of their lives. The concept includes the things we believe in, long for and strive after in life.
A 'walk' in the biblical understanding is more than a pedestrian stroll. It is in fact nothing less than a lifestyle. To 'walk' together with or after another man means much more than simply chatting with him or enjoying his company for a time. In the biblical sense, it is to subscribe to his beliefs and ideology.
The apostle Paul, recognizing the importance of this principle, invites the Philippian believers and all of us to carefully follow the examples we have in Christ. The people you choose to follow in life become the patterns that mould your life into a lifestyle that is moving toward your eternal destiny. Think about it (cf 1 Cor. 15:33). You can't afford not to.
