Martial allusions are common in the Scriptures. The Apostle Paul exhorted the young Timothy to "endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ" (II Tim. 2:3), and that the "…weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds." (II Cor. 10:4) Those spiritual weapons and armor are listed in Ephesians 6:13 – 17. The Apostle John saw a vision of the conquering King on a white horse: "…and he went forth conquering, and to conquer." (Rev. 6:2) In our text today, the Apostle Peter also employs martial language as he applies the finished work of Christ to the day-to-day struggle of the Christian in a fallen world. The struggle, which often has very real and immediate physical manifestations, is usually won or lost before the battle is joined. Peter tells us how to properly prepare for the battle and how we ought to arm ourselves for it.
