We tend to believe in this verse, "But demonstrates His love toward us by blessing us with good things, with ease and comfort, with a life trouble free and when everything goes well for us." None of us might say that explicitly but that is often the way some people think.
God in his great love and kindness to His people returned Israel to Jerusalem. As these post-exilic Jews trickled in, Haggai and Zechariah prophesied wonderful things in the future and encouraged them to rebuild the temple and about hundred years later, after the Temple was rebuilt, Malachi prophesies to Israel. Those wonderful things prophesied in Zechariah did not materialize. At this time, Israel didn't have a lot, had little power, little control, and survived under dire conditions. Other nations seem to prosper around them but they remained weak and destitute in comparison.

Muse on God's electing love (vv. 2-3). V. Consider God's power and man's impotence (v. 4). VI. Gaze upon God's faithfulness and glory (v. 5).
