As we saw last week in the death of Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary, death is a great enemy which visits every family. John 11:1-24.
When speaking with Martha, Jesus makes the claim to be the conqueror of death. John 11:25-26 “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believers in Me will never die.”
In this Sunday’s message we shall see how Jesus proves His claim by raising Lazarus from the dead. John 11:28-44.
In our passage we also see Jesus’ sympathetic humanity in the shortest verse in the New Testament (“Jesus wept.”). And we see His deity as He speaks and the man who had been in the tomb for four days lives.
Just as David, the anointed one of God, went forth into battle to conquer Goliath, an enemy against whom his fearful people were helpless and afraid; Jesus has come into the world to conquer death on behalf of God’s helpless and fearful people (Hebrews 2:14-15).
In spite of the undeniable miracle or resurrection which has taken place some refuse to believe (John 11:47-53). May God open the eyes of many to submit themselves to our Lord Jesus Christ.
