In the book of Joshua, the people of Judah and the people of Joseph were the two tribes that went out and took possession of their inheritance.
Some scholars think that this is just reading backwards from the division of the kingdom (Judah and Benjamin on one side – and the ten other tribes, with Joseph in the lead).
But the fact that Joshua and Judges portray Judah and Joseph as the leaders of Israel doesn't mean that they are "projecting" backwards.
Indeed, as we saw in the book of Joshua, Judah and Joseph were the leaders because Caleb was from Judah, and Joshua was from Ephraim!
Not surprisingly, the two tribes that were most active in taking possession of the land were led by the two spies who believed God's promises!
It may seem obvious – but it bears repeating: When your leaders believe God's promises and act accordingly, you generally do better than when they don't!
The book of Judges will have a lot to say on this topic...
